Frequently Asked Questions

I have plans for an extension or new build — when should I contact you?

You don't need to wait until you're ready to start on site. We're happy to look at a project at an early stage and discuss the groundworks required. If you already have architectural or structural drawings, send them over and we can take a look.

I'm not sure exactly what is included in the groundworks. Where does your work start and finish?

This varies between projects, but we can provide the complete groundworks package — from preparing and excavating the site through foundations, drainage and construction up to floor level, ready for the next trades to begin.

Do I need to arrange the concrete, materials, machinery and removal of excavated soil myself?

No. Where these form part of our quotation, we can organise the materials, concrete, plant, muck-away and other requirements needed to complete our work.

Do I need a builder first, or can I employ GRS Groundworks directly?

You can contact us directly. We regularly work from architectural and structural drawings and can undertake the groundworks package before handing the project over for the next stage. We're also happy to work alongside your existing builder, architect or other contractors.

Will you visit the site before providing a quotation?

Yes. For most projects we'll arrange a site visit so we can understand the proposed work, access and site conditions before preparing a quotation. Drawings and other project information are also very helpful at this stage.

What happens if something unexpected is found once excavation starts?

Ground conditions and existing services aren't always fully known until work begins. If something unexpected is uncovered that could affect the work or cost, we'll discuss it with you before carrying out additional work wherever possible.

My property has difficult or restricted access — is that a problem?

Not necessarily. Every site is different and we'll assess access as part of looking at the project. We have experience working on sites where access, levels or ground conditions make the groundworks more challenging.

How long will the groundworks take?

This depends on the size and complexity of the project, ground conditions and access. Once we've seen the drawings and site, we'll be able to give you a much better indication of how long your particular groundworks are likely to take.
